La IA, herramienta clave para combinar sostenibilidad y eficiencia
- Consultant and AI project designer Alba Meijide spoke at CITIC of UDC about responsible innovation in the “Green Convergence for a Sustainable Future” cycle, as part of the Inditex-UDC Chair of AI in Green Algorithms.
A Coruña, December 11, 2024.- CITIC of UDC hosted the conference “Responsible Innovation” by consultant and project designer Alba Meijide on Tuesday, December 10th, where she discussed how artificial intelligence can be a key tool for advancing towards a sustainable future. Through two practical examples, she explained how the efficient design of AI systems allows for the combination of sustainability and efficiency in the use of available resources.
In the first example, with a technical focus, she highlighted the importance of developing sustainable AI models. Meijide emphasized the need to implement efficient systems that replace highly energy-intensive processes. To illustrate this, she presented a project for managing filming locations. The AI applied in this case optimizes the search for different scenarios through an interactive map that also includes information about hotels, catering companies, and other relevant services for production. This system uses convolutional neural networks, specifically designed to work with images, and optimizes energy consumption during the model training process.
In the second example, starting from a creative approach, she explained how AI-based projects can optimize processes and reduce resource consumption, opening up new possibilities in various sectors.
Among the conclusions, she highlighted that generative AI represents a challenge due to its high computational demand, but also an opportunity if appropriate technical decisions are made in system design. She stressed the importance of evaluating and choosing efficient AI models, regardless of their application, to ensure sustainability and maximize positive impact.
This conference is part of the activities organized by the Inditex-UDC Chair of AI in Green Algorithms, which aims to promote research, innovation, and knowledge transfer in the field of artificial intelligence and green algorithms to contribute to sustainable development and environmental protection.
