Desirable competences of First stage researchers R1

First stage researchers are starting their research career, so they are under the supervision of more experienced researchers. They have demonstrated a good understanding of their field of study, the ability to produce data under supervision and the ambition to develop knowledge of research methodologies and discipline. They are capable of critical analysis, evaluation and able to explain the outcome of research and value (thereof) to research colleagues.

R2 RECOGNISED RESEARCHERS

Once the researchers have been awarded their PhD, they start a new stage of the research career with a wide variety of options, in the academic sector, in research organisations and in private companies.

Fellowships

For this stage there are several different fellowships, according to the experience and the personal preferences of the researchers:

  • ERC individual grants: for 5-year projects at the frontiers of knowledge, that provide the resources to create new research groups.
  • Oportunius programme of the Xunta de Galicia (regional government), for researchers awarded an ERC grant.
  • MSCA-Postdoctoral fellowships, individual grants for with 24-36 months projects that include international mobility, for researchers with up to 8 years of postdoctoral experience
  • InTalent: collaborative programme of the UDC and Inditex to recruit excellent researchers, with international experience and projection.
  • Grants for distinguished researchers in the Galician University System of the Xunta de Galicia (regional government), 4-year contracts that include funding for the individual projects of the awarded researchers.
  • Ramón y Cajal grants, for 5-year individual projects to start new research lines, for researchers with at least 3 years of postdoctoral experience.
  • Torres Quevedo grants, for researchers who want to develop their postdoctoral career in a private company or a technology centre.
  • Beatriz Galindo grants for international talent attraction, 5-year contracts for researchers who have carried out their careers abroad (junior modality).
  • Juan de la Cierva Training and Juan de la Cierva Incorporation grants: 2-year contracts for new doctors (training) or with 3 years of postdoctoral experience (incorporation).
  • Margarita Salas grants for new doctors, 3-year contracts that can include a 1-year international secondment.
  • Postdoctoral fellowships from the Galician Regional Government, Xunta de Galicia, 3-year contracts with 2 years abroad and 1 year of return phase.
  • CITIC’s postdoctoral fellowships, that provide researchers the opportunity to start their research career in our centre.

Desirable competences of recognised researchers R2

R2 researchers are starting their postdoctoral stage. In this step, they start to run and manage their careers, stablishing professional goals that are realistic and achievable; they are also able to identify and carry out actions to improve their employability.

R2 researchers have a systematic understanding of their fields of study and improved critical analysis evaluation and synthesis of new and complex ideas. They can conceive, design, implement and adapt a programme of research. They have made a contribution through original research that extends the frontier of knowledge by developing a substantial body of work, innovation or application. This could merit national or international refereed publication or patent. They are able to explain the outcome of their research (and value thereof) to research community by conference and scientific papers. They understand the agenda of industry and the value of their research work in the context of products and services from industry and other employment sectors.

R3 ESTABLISHED RESEARCHERS

Researchers in this stage have several years of postdoctoral experience and are independent to develop their professional career. In this stage, they can start their own research lines.

Fellowships

There are different fellowships and grants available for R3 researchers. Some of them help to stablish new research lines and groups:

  • ERC individual grants: for 5-year projects at the frontiers of knowledge, that provide the resources to create new research groups.
  • Oportunius programme of the Xunta de Galicia (regional government), for researchers awarded an ERC grant.
  • MSCA-Postdoctoral fellowships, individual grants for with 24-36 months projects that include international mobility, for researchers with up to 8 years of postdoctoral experience

  • Ramón y Cajal grants, for 5-year individual projects to start new research lines, for researchers with at least 3 years of postdoctoral experience.
  • Beatriz Galindo grants for international talent attraction, 5-year contracts for researchers who have carried out their careers abroad (senior modality).
  • María Zambrano grants to attract international talent, for researchers with more than 2 years of postdoctoral experience abroad.

If you are interested in applying to any of these grants with CITIC as a hosting institution, you can get in touch with us through our contact form.

Desirable competences of established researchers R3

At R3 stage, researchers have developed a level of independence and a thorough knowledge of the research system. R3 researchers are able to conduct research independently and have a total control over their careers.

R3 researchers go further in their competences, making a positive contribution to the development of knowledge, research and development through co-operations and collaborations, in both academic and industrial fields. They can identify research problems and opportunities within their area of expertise and the appropriate research methodologies and approaches. They know the main funding mechanisms and might carry out their own research line. R3 researchers can also supervise and mentor novel reseachers.

R4 LEADING RESEARCHERS

At this stage, researchers are leading their own research group or line, perfectly understand the research and innovation system and have a strategic vision of their research fields.

Grants

The main grants for R4 researchers are:

  • ERC individual grants: for 5-year projects at the frontiers of knowledge, that provide the resources to create new research groups.
  • Oportunius programme of the Xunta de Galicia (regional government), for researchers awarded an ERC grant.
  • Grants to create and consolidate competitive research groups of the Xunta de Galicia (regional government). These grants fund research groups in the Galician University System, newly created or with a remarkable experience.

Desirable competences of leading researchers R4

R4 researchers are leading their own teams or research lines. They have an outstanding critical judgement in the identification and execution of research activities and have developed a strategic vision on the future of the research field. R4 researchers publish and present influential papers and books, serve on workshop and conference organising committees and deliver invited talks.

At this stage, the R4 researchers are experts at managing and leading research projects and teams, with vision on the future; have wide collaboration networks; are able to create an innovative and creative environment for research; are excellent communicators and act as professional development model for others.
