Artificial Intelligence and Green Convergence Take Center Stage at CITIC of UDC

03/03/2025 - CITIC

A Coruña, March 3, 2025 .– As part of the INDITEX-UDC Chair of Artificial Intelligence in Green Algorithms, the third session of the series “Green Convergence: AI for a Sustainable Future” will take place on Friday, March 7, at 12:00 PM in the Cloud Room at CITIC, University of A Coruña (UDC).

Coral Calero Muñoz will deliver a lecture titled “Green is the New Black: Challenges in Software and AI Development,” addressing the challenges posed by the energy consumption associated with software and artificial intelligence. The event will be held on Friday, March 7, at 12:00 PM in the Cloud Room at CITIC.

The growing significance of software in society is undeniable, with its evolution shaped by data, the internet, and artificial intelligence. However, this progress also leads to increased energy consumption, with estimates suggesting that information and communication technologies (ICT) could account for up to 20% of global energy consumption by 2030. The talk will analyze the factors driving this increase and provide real-world examples of energy consumption, along with tools and methodologies for its measurement.

Calero Muñoz holds a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering and is a Professor at the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM). She is the director of the GreenTeam Alarcos research group and a member of the Spanish Research Ethics Committee.

This event is free of charge, but registration is required via this link. The talk is part of Environmental March 2025 at UDC, a series organized by the University’s Sustainability Office and Green Campus Committees to provide a comprehensive perspective on climate realities and sustainability. The initiative, running from March 6 to March 31, includes both theoretical activities (lectures, panel discussions) and practical experiences (workshops, technical visits, environmental volunteering).

Research to Reduce the Environmental Impact of ICT

The INDITEX-UDC Chair of AI in Green Algorithms is part of the 21 ENIA (National Artificial Intelligence Strategy) chairs promoted by the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Administration.

Led by CITIC researcher Verónica Bolón, this initiative aims to minimize the environmental impact of software applications and promote the development of sustainable solutions through so-called «green algorithms».

According to Bolón, “Collaboration with Inditex within the framework of this chair allows us to tackle new challenges in the industry while serving as a platform for validating and scaling the results obtained”.

The chair comprises a research team of 20 members, 16 of whom are affiliated with the Research Center for Information and Communication Technologies at UDC (CITIC).
