CITIC at the UDC, a European benchmark in ICT solutions for health
- Its role in the European drug repurposing project, RePo-SUDOE, focuses on developing advanced tools in personalised medicine
- The team, led by CITIC researcher Carlos Fernández Lozano, is working on optimising treatments through ICT solutions such as a drug database, web and mobile applications, and the computational implementation of repurposing using machine learning techniques
- The second conference of this initiative, which will bring together research staff, science and technology institutions and biotech companies, is promoted by the UDC and the Cluster Saúde de Galicia, and will take place on 15 and 16 December in A Coruña
A Coruña, 03 December 2025.- CITIC at the Universidade da Coruña reaffirms its role as a European benchmark in ICT solutions applied to health through its participation in the European RePo-SUDOE project, focused on drug repurposing through personalised medicine.
The team led by CITIC researcher Carlos Fernández Lozano is working on optimising treatments through advanced ICT tools, such as databases, web and mobile applications, and the computational implementation of drug repurposing using machine learning techniques. These solutions make it possible to advance towards more precise and efficient treatments, helping to strengthen the biopharmaceutical ecosystem in the SUDOE region (Spain, France and Portugal).
The drug repurposing approach leverages medicines that are already approved for new indications, reducing costs, speeding up development processes and lowering the environmental footprint, while at the same time providing solutions to current challenges such as antibiotic resistance and other infectious or genetic diseases. According to Fernández Lozano, this strategy also contributes to a more efficient use of healthcare resources and supports rapid innovation in the pharmaceutical industry.
The RePo-SUDOE project promotes multidisciplinary collaboration: specialists in biology, bioinformatics, engineering, pharmaceutical chemistry and public health work together to analyse large volumes of data and develop tools that facilitate the interpretation of complex results, adapting them to different therapeutic contexts.
Second Conference in A Coruña
On 15 December, the Hotel Finisterre in A Coruña will host the Second Conference of the RePo-SUDOE project, promoted by the Universidade da Coruña and the Cluster Saúde de Galicia, which will bring together research staff, science and technology institutions and companies from the biopharmaceutical sector. The conference will showcase advances in drug repurposing methods, a key strategy for generating more agile, cost-effective and efficient therapeutic solutions, and will address current biomedical challenges such as drug resistance through precision technologies and new scientific approaches.
The programme will include specialised presentations in pharmacology, oncology, diagnostics, multi-omics, artificial intelligence and biomedicine, as well as a round table on the regulation of drug repurposing and an area for demonstrations and networking. This meeting strengthens collaboration between research centres, universities and companies in the sector, promoting knowledge transfer and the creation of synergies within the European biomedical arena.
On 16 December, CITIC at the UDC will host a special session, with detailed presentations on the project’s scientific progress, a professional virtual reality demonstration and a guided tour of the centre’s facilities. Attendees will be able to meet first-hand the research team responsible for the main milestones of RePo-SUDOE.
Registration for both days is open to professionals from the biomedical sector, research staff, technical staff, digital health companies, students and innovation ecosystem stakeholders interested in the potential of drug repurposing and in the European cooperation opportunities offered by the project.
