Santiago de Compostela, February 11, 2025. The Research Center for Information and Communication Technologies (CITIC) of the University of A Coruña (UDC) received recognition this morning as a center of excellence within the CIGUS Network at an event held at the Cidade da Cultura. The CIGUS Network is an initiative promoted by the Xunta de Galicia to strengthen university research excellence in the region. Currently, ten centers from the three Galician universities are part of this network, including CITIC.

Manuel G. Penedo, director of CITIC, expressed his gratitude for the recognition on behalf of the entire team, including both research and management staff. He emphasized the importance of technological research for the social and economic progress of Galicia.

In his speech, González Penedo highlighted that CITIC’s work goes beyond technological development, as it directly contributes to social well-being and the economy. “We are working to find solutions to global challenges such as sustainability, energy efficiency, and disaster emergency management. Additionally, we promote projects in the field of social inclusion, facilitating global access to information and reducing the digital divide,” he explained.

The CITIC director also stressed the center’s commitment to research excellence and collaboration with other leading entities in Galicia. In this regard, he called for continued support and visibility from public institutions, as research centers play a key role in consolidating a strong and competitive innovation ecosystem.

González Penedo reflected on CITIC’s journey since 2016, when, along with other research centers, it embarked on a path that presented a significant challenge. “It has been a complex journey, but thanks to continuous effort and collaboration from everyone, we have laid the foundations to drive scientific development at the forefront of knowledge,” he stated.

Finally, he recognized the dedication of CITIC’s research and management staff. “None of this would be possible without the commitment of our team and the support of the University of A Coruña,” he concluded.
