Four CITIC Members Ranked Among the World's Best Researchers by Research.com

A Coruña, May 23, 2024.– The academic platform Research.com has released the 2024 edition of its ranking of the world’s best scientists, encompassing the highest level and most prominent researchers on both national and international stages. Research.com provides information on the best educational institutions, academic opportunities, and career paths they offer. Additionally, it conducts a ranking evaluating the quality of universities and the most highly rated scientific personnel. The platform has recognized the achievements of twelve members of UDC, including four from CITIC: Amparo Alonso, Tiago M. Fernández, Paula Fraga, and Verónica Bolón. 

Amparo Alonso is a full professor in the field of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence and a member of the CITIC Steering Committee. She specializes in the development of scalable machine learning models and responsible and sustainable AI, among other areas. In October 2023, she was appointed Corresponding Academician of the Royal Spanish Academy of Exact, Physical, and Natural Sciences. She is a member of CAIA, the Advisory Council on Artificial Intelligence of the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Function, and the Spanish Research Ethics Committee of the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities. 

Tiago M. Fernández is a permanent researcher at CITIC and an associate professor at UDC in the area of electronic technology. He holds a PhD in Computer Engineering and has been working in the Department of Computer Engineering at UDC since 2005. His research areas include IoT systems, extended reality, and Industry 4.0 and 5.0 paradigms. 

Paula Fraga is a researcher at CITIC and a professor at the University of A Coruña. She has participated in over 40 public research projects at the regional and national levels, as well as in R&D projects with private companies such as ADIF, Siemens, Indra, and Navantia. Her research focuses on Industry 4.0 technologies: cyber-physical systems, IoT, extended reality, blockchain, and cybersecurity. 

Verónica Bolón is an associate professor at UDC in the Department of Computer Science and Information Technologies and a researcher at CITIC, as well as a member of its Steering Committee. She currently works in various areas related to Artificial Intelligence, particularly green algorithms. She coordinates the Coruña node of the Inspira STEAM project, developed to promote scientific and technological vocations among girls. She is a full member of the Young Academy of Spain and a corresponding academician of the Royal Academy of Exact, Physical, and Natural Sciences, being the youngest woman in the corporation. 

In 2023, Verónica Bolón, Amparo Alonso, Tiago M. Fernández, and Paula Fraga were included in the World’s Top 2% Scientists List compiled by Stanford University in California (USA), considered one of the most prestigious international rankings. 

Research.com has also included Christian Kennes, Carlos Platas, Miguel Maestro, Purificación López, Manuel López Vicente, and Federico Pomar from the Interdisciplinary Center for Chemistry and Biology (CICA) at UDC; as well as Francisco J. Blanco in medicine, associated with CICA and INIBIC; and Antonio Valle in psychology.
