  • The CITIC researcher from the Universidade da Coruña will discuss the explainability of artificial intelligence in education.

A Coruña, February 21, 2025.– Francisco Bellas, a researcher at CITIC of the Universidade da Coruña, will participate next Monday, February 24, in the series “Shaping AI as a Public Good in Education”, organized by the European Digital Education Hub of the European Commission. The session, which will be held online, will start at 11:00 and will also feature Zeynep Varoglu from UNESCO and Matthew Sanders from Meta.

The CITIC researcher will address the importance of promoting explainable AI systems in education, emphasizing their role in fostering critical and autonomous thinking in relation to AI. The integration of artificial intelligence in education presents a fundamental challenge: ensuring that these systems are reliable. This means that AI tools must not only be transparent, revealing details about their functioning, but also interpretable, using techniques that provide clear and understandable information for users while ensuring that their explanations are comprehensible.

Understanding how and why an AI system makes certain decisions enables students to question results, assess their reliability, and maintain control over the learning process. “Raising awareness within the educational community about this necessity is essential to ensuring that technology complements teaching without replacing human judgment”, says Bellas.
