Marina Otero to Address the Challenges of Digital Storage and the Climate Crisis at the “Into the Depths of the Cloud” Lecture by the INDITEX-UDC Chair

30/05/2025 - CITIC
  • The talk will take place at CITIC on Friday, June 6 at 12:00 pm, with free admission until capacity is reached.

A Coruña, May 23, 2025– The INDITEX-UDC Chair of Artificial Intelligence in Green Algorithms resumes its lecture series “Green Convergence: AI for a Sustainable Future” with a distinguished international guest: Marina Otero Verzier, professor at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP) at Columbia University (New York). The talk will be held at CITIC, part of the Universidade da Coruña and a member of the Xunta de Galicia’s CIGUS Network, which certifies the quality and impact of its research.

Her lecture, titled “Into the Depths of the Cloud,” will take place on Friday, June 6 at 12:00 pm, in the Cloud Room at CITIC, located on the Elviña Campus of the Universidade da Coruña. Admission is free until the venue reaches full capacity. To attend, simply fill out this form.

In her talk, Otero will explore future models of digital storage from a critical and interdisciplinary perspective. Focusing on the environmental and social implications of the so-called “cloud”—including its high energy consumption and the outsourcing of our digital memory to large corporations—she will propose new ways of designing digital infrastructures that integrate architecture, digital culture, and preservation through a feral, relational, and situated logic.

The lecture is part of the Data Mourning initiative, a project led by Otero at Columbia University that focuses on the intersection between digital infrastructures and the climate crisis.

This event presents a unique opportunity to reflect on the future of data storage and the role of architecture and AI in designing more sustainable, critical, and human-centered systems.

About the INDITEX-UDC Chair of AI in Green Algorithms

The INDITEX-UDC Chair of AI in Green Algorithms aims to promote research, innovation, and knowledge transfer in the field of artificial intelligence and green algorithms to contribute to sustainable development and environmental protection. Some of its specific objectives include:

  • Developing training programs in green AI.
  • Promoting research and innovation in green AI by identifying challenges and encouraging public-private cooperation.
  • Facilitating the transfer and commercialization of the Chair’s research results through services, products, and the creation of spin-offs.
  • Promoting the dissemination of research outcomes and knowledge in green AI through scientific publications and the organization of outreach and citizen science events.
  • Establishing the Chair as a regional, national, and international benchmark in green AI by participating in events and working groups, collaborating with other institutions, and identifying funding opportunities.

A team of 20 people forms the Chair, 16 of whom are affiliated with the CITIC at the Universidade da Coruña. The team consists of 10 women and 10 men. It is a multidisciplinary group, “as required by research in green algorithms,” notes the project’s lead researcher Verónica Bolón, “which involves support from research groups in artificial intelligence and computer science, environmental issues, and ethical, social, and economic studies”.

The Chair receives competitive public funding through the “ENIA Chairs” grants, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), funded by the European Union – Next Generation EU, with support from the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Service.

About CITIC

CITIC is a research center that promotes progress and excellence in applied R&D&I in ICTs, created in 2008 by the Universidade da Coruña. The center’s scientific activity is structured around four main research areas: Artificial Intelligence, Data Science and Engineering, High-Performance Computing, and Intelligent Services and Networks, as well as a cross-cutting area: Cybersecurity.

CITIC is accredited as a Center of Excellence and a member of the CIGUS Network for the 2024–2027 period, a recognition of the quality and impact of its research. The accreditation, structuring, and enhancement of CITIC is co-financed by the Xunta de Galicia and 60% by the European Union under the ERDF Galicia 2021–2027 Operational Program, under the thematic objective of promoting “a smarter Europe: innovative and smart economic transformation” (ED431G 2023/01).
