Professor Bairong Shen shares his vision of "smart medicine" for personalized care at CITIC of UDC
Researcher Bairong Shen gave a lecture titled “Translational Informatics and Future Digital Medicine” at CITIC of UDC on the 6th, as part of the activities organized by the RNASA-IMEDIR group, coordinated by CITIC researcher Alejandro Pazos.
Professor Shen’s lecture highlighted the importance of “smart medicine”, a new paradigm that combines information technology with medical practice, seeking to provide personalized, precise, and intelligent medical care. This field, supported and driven by biobanks, offers significant opportunities for healthcare, despite facing certain challenges.
Professor Shen, Executive Director of the Institutes of Systems Genetics at the West China Hospital of Sichuan University, has been a pioneer in the application of translational informatics in the biomedical field. His talk highlighted how the application of translational informatics spans from diagnosis to treatment, prevention, and education, using prostate cancer as an example.
“By integrating high-quality data and interpretable models, smart medicine can offer more precise and personalized medical solutions, improving treatment outcomes and patient survival rates”, said Professor Shen during his lecture.
The event also featured the presence of CITIC researcher Alejandro Pazos, coordinator of the RNASA-IMEDIR group, who facilitated Professor Shen’s visit and highlighted the relevance of his contributions to biomedical research. He also gave a lecture titled “New Technological Advances in Personalised Healthcare in the Next 10 Years”, in which he reviewed the technological advances expected to occur in the coming years and how artificial intelligence will influence their development. He then introduced a paradigm of the causes of diseases and what is known as “nP” Medicine (Proactive, Predictive, Preventive, Personalized, Precise, Polyprofessional, Participatory, Permanent, and Peripheral). He also explained how AI can help in these characteristics through the research carried out by the RNASA-IMEDIR group.
Bairong Shen, with a career spanning over 25 years in the field of bioinformatics and smart medicine, has published more than 200 scientific articles and 10 books. He has also been a reviewer for more than 30 international journals and is an affiliate member of the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle.
