Registration open for mentors and educational centers in Inspira STEAM 2024-2025: A project to highlight women scientists and technologists and break stereotypes
CITIC researchers Verónica Bolón and María Baamonde, along with University of A Coruña professor Fernando De Llano, are launching a new edition of the Inspira STEAM 2024-2025 project in A Coruña. This program, pioneering in Spain, aims to promote scientific and technological vocations among young people, especially girls, to reduce the gender gap in STEAM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics).
The Inspira STEAM project is looking for mentors and educational centers interested in participating in the 2024-2025 edition. To participate, interested individuals and centers can register on the program’s intranet (http://intranet.inspirasteam.net) and activate their registration before October 15, 2024.
Mentors will have the opportunity to conduct 6 mentoring sessions with a group of 8 to 15 students from 6th grade of Primary or 1st grade of ESO, during school hours throughout the academic year. They will receive 5 hours of online training to prepare these sessions and will have all the necessary materials.
An urgent need for female role models and equality in STEAM
Recent studies, such as data from Eustat – Confebask, show that vocations in STEAM disciplines are decreasing, especially among girls. In fact, in the last 4 years, there has been a 16.6% decrease in enrollments in STEAM studies, where only 9% of Vocational Training students and 31% of university students are women. This situation requires an intervention that offers nearby female role models to inspire girls, so they see their capabilities and do not discard these careers due to ignorance or insecurity.
Inspira STEAM seeks to highlight women scientists and technologists, break stereotypes, and promote greater diversity in professional teams. It is also essential for men to participate as mentors, helping to raise awareness among boys about the importance of equality in science and technology.
