Francisco Bellas, researcher at CITIC of the University of A Coruña, presented in Paris last week the conclusions of the European report Explainable AI in Education, within the framework of the international event Digital Learning Week 2025, organized by UNESCO.

The document, published by the Publications Office of the European Union and available at https://lnkd.in/dV2dYjUQ, addresses the potential of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) in the educational field and offers a set of recommendations for its development and implementation aimed at key stakeholders: policymakers, educators, and developers. Its goal is to ensure that the application of these technologies is carried out under principles of transparency, ethics, and trust, allowing teachers and students to understand how AI systems work, which are increasingly present in education.

In a session shared with researcher Lidija Kralj, co-author of the report, Bellas emphasized that “Creating transparent, fair, and human-centered AI for education means creating systems that are not only technically reliable, but also context-appropriate, legally compliant, and pedagogically effective”.

The report highlights that the lack of explainability in artificial intelligence systems may hinder their adoption in education, as it raises concerns about the validity of results, potential biases, and the protection of students’ rights. For this reason, it proposes a framework that combines technological innovation, teacher training, and clear regulatory criteria.

Forum to analyze AI and the future of education

Digital Learning Week 2025, held from September 2 to 5 at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, addressed the impacts of artificial intelligence on education, highlighting both its transformative potential and the dilemmas it raises. Under the theme “AI and the Future of Education: Disruptions, Dilemmas and Directions”, the event analyzed how AI is reshaping pedagogies, curricula, and governance models, while generating debates on equity, ethics, digital surveillance, and human responsibility in decision-making. The event sought to guide education systems toward an AI integration that is equitable, ethical, and human-centered, in order to ensure that technology drives inclusive progress in the educational sphere.
