The impact of green algorithms: A webinar to address their ethical, social, and legal challenges
A Coruña, April 2, 2025.– In the framework of the National Green Algorithms Program (PNAV), on April 3 at 10:00 AM, the webinar “PNAV Ecosystem: Ethical, Social, and Economic Implications of Green Algorithms” will be held. The team from the INDITEX-UDC Chair of AI in Green Algorithms will analyze the impact of artificial intelligence from the perspective of social sciences.
The Chair is part of the PNAV, a plan managed by the Subdirectorate General for the Promotion and Regulation of Artificial Intelligence, under the Ministry of Digital Transformation and Public Administration.
Psychology and Law.
The session will address this issue from two disciplines: Psychology and Law, featuring insights from two members of the Chair’s research team at the University of A Coruña. Adina Dumitru, a specialist in Evolutionary and Educational Psychology, will present “Barriers and Facilitators of Pro-Environmental Behavior: Psychological Perspectives Applied to AI,” analyzing the factors influencing the adoption of sustainable behaviors and how to integrate them into AI tool design.
Javier Sanz, an expert in Administrative Law, will present the lecture “Towards the Legal Regulation of Green Algorithms: Regulation and/or Self-Regulation?”, exploring the current and future regulatory framework necessary for the development of algorithms with a positive environmental impact.
Additionally, the director of the Chair and researcher at CITIC of UDC, Verónica Bolón, will present the activities and objectives of this initiative, which is part of the National Green Algorithms Program ecosystem. This program aims to position Spain at the forefront of research and best practices for green AI development, contributing to reducing the environmental impact of digital technologies.
The Program includes independent experts, universities, startups, certification bodies, industrial entities, technology providers, cloud service providers, and government organizations that share a commitment to sustainability.

Research to reduce the environmental impact of ICT
The INDITEX-UDC Chair of AI in Green Algorithms is one of the 21 ENIA (National Artificial Intelligence Strategy) chairs granted by the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Administration. Led by CITIC researcher Verónica Bolón, the chair seeks to reduce the environmental impact of software applications through research and their use in finding sustainable solutions, commonly known as “green algorithms”.
The Chair follows four lines of research:
- Development of energy-efficient algorithms.
- AI for energy efficiency and sustainable development.
- Sustainable robotics.
- Study of the ethical, social, and economic implications of green algorithms.
The Chair’s team consists of 20 members, 16 of whom are affiliated with the Center for Information and Communication Technology Research at UDC (CITIC).
