Xabier Martínez Rolán, UVigo professor gives a course on artificial intelligence tools in CITIC

11/07/2024 - CITIC

A Coruña, July 11, 2024.- The CITIC held today the last session of the course “Introduction to the use of generative AIs”, taught by Xabier Martínez Rolán, professor of Digital Communication at the University of Vigo. Throughout four sessions, research staff from CITIC and the university learnt about different AI-based tools applied to research.

The specialist explained the history of artificial intelligence from its emergence to the present time. From the initial context, he explained how to create appropriate prompts for chatbots, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Microsoft Copilot. Prompts are a way of communicating with AI systems through which we can specify what results we expect to obtain and that, with the advance of this technology, will be perfected as these tools can understand increasingly complex and abstract prompts.

In this regard, Martínez Rolán offered some instructions to optimize its use: indicate to the chatbot what role it should assume, such as “you are an expert in accounting”; precisely define the target to which it should direct its responses; and specify, in detail, the expected results, such as the tone of language we want the response to have or its output format.

Generative artificial intelligence can also be used to create images, videos, presentations or music. In this sense, attendees put into practice image creation applications, such as Adobe Firefly, Leonardo AI or Freepik; video generation models such as OpenAI’s Sora, HeyGen or Luma AI; or audio generation, such as ElevenLabs.

The last session, held today, is focused on artificial intelligence applied to academic research. There are several useful tools, such as Consensus.app, which is used to search for information in research articles; Research Rabbit, created to search for articles in academic journals; or Scholarcy, a tool to summarize the most relevant information in scientific documents.
