The CITIC researcher and professor of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the Universidade da Coruña, Amparo Alonso, officially joined the Real Academia de Ciencias Exactas, Físicas y Naturales (RAC) this past March 6th.

“Green and responsible AI” was the theme chosen by the researcher for her induction ceremony as a corresponding academic. In her speech, she highlighted the influence of artificial intelligence (AI) on contemporary society, comparing it to the revolution that electricity represented in its time. She emphasized that AI is transforming the way people interact, mentioning everyday examples such as the use of automatic checkouts instead of interacting with people during shopping. Amparo Alonso stressed the importance of recognizing that artificial intelligence is simply a tool and underscored society’s responsibility in its proper use.

One of the aspects highlighted by the CITIC researcher during her speech was the current geopolitical landscape in AI development. China leads investment in this field, followed by the United States, which hosts the main companies in the sector. In contrast, Europe, in third place, shows greater concern for AI serving citizens and advocates for its regulation.

The induction ceremony was attended by distinguished personalities, including Asunción Gómez-Pérez, Vice-Rector for Research at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and academic of the Real Academia de la Lengua (RAE), as well as Ricardo Cao, rector of the Universidade da Coruña.

Amparo Alonso joined the exact sciences section of the Real Academia de Ciencias Exactas, Físicas y Naturales, being proposed by academics Enrique Castillo, José Bonet, and José Duato. Her incorporation highlights her relevance and contribution to the field of artificial intelligence and her commitment to the sustainable and responsible development of this technology.
