CITIC of the UDC brings together astrophysics experts to share advances in white dwarf research

23/01/2025 - CITIC
  • The third meeting of the Iberian White Dwarf Working Group took place this week at CITIC.

The Center for Research in Information and Communication Technologies (CITIC) of the University of A Coruña hosted the third meeting of the Iberian White Dwarf Working Group from January 21 to 23, coordinated by researcher Minia Manteiga.

This event brought together prominent astrophysics experts to discuss and share the latest advances in white dwarf research, a type of star that represents the final state of the evolution of stars like our Sun. These dense and extremely hot stars are natural laboratories that allow the exploration of extreme physical processes, providing valuable information about the structure and evolution of the universe.

Among the participants are researchers from prestigious institutions such as the University of A Coruña, the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, the University of Granada, the University of Vigo, the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands (IAC), the Center for Studies in Physics of the Cosmos of Aragon (CEFCA), the ICE-CSIC, and the National University of La Plata, among others.

The Iberian White Dwarf Workshop (IWD) is a professional meeting of national and international astrophysicists who investigate the final stages of stellar evolution. The first of these meetings took place in 2023 in Barcelona, at the Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Institute of Cosmos Sciences of the University of Barcelona (ICCUB). The second edition was held last year in Madrid, at the Center for Astrobiology (CAB-INTA).

This year, the conference was held at CITIC, an ideal place to address the event’s themes, as techniques such as artificial intelligence (AI) and Big Data are increasingly relevant in astrophysical research. For this reason, the 2025 edition included, for the first time, a session specifically dedicated to the application of AI to the study of white dwarfs.
