  • The educational talks, taking place this Thursday, November 14, either in person at MUNCYT or virtually, are aimed at secondary school and high school students.

The Center for Research in Information and Communication Technologies (CITIC) at the University of A Coruña will host a series of educational talks aimed at secondary school, high school, and vocational training students, recommended for those aged 14 and up. These talks, part of Science Week, are designed to highlight the connections between science, technology, computer science, linguistics, and mathematics, and to explore their impact on modern society.

The talks will take place both in person at MUNCYT Coruña and virtually, allowing schools across Spain to participate via videoconference.

Program

  • 10:30-11:00 h. “Computer Science and Genome Recognition” by José Ramón Paramá Gabía. This session will delve into advances in computing that enable fast and accessible human genome sequencing, highlighting how technology has reduced the costs and time involved in this process.
  • 11:15-11:45 h. Science and Technology for Brain-Computer Interfaces” by Adriana Dapena Janeiro. Students will learn how brain-computer interfaces (BCI) convert brain activity into commands to control technological devices, combining science, engineering, and mathematics.
  • 12:00-12:30 h. Connections Between Linguistics and Artificial Intelligence” by Margarita María Alonso Ramos. This session will explore the role of linguistics in technology, focusing on applications like machine translation and search systems. Current systems, such as ChatGPT, will also be evaluated from a linguistic perspective.
  • 12:45-13:15 h. “A Journey Through Positioning Systems” by Carlos J. Escudero. This talk will cover the evolution of positioning technologies and explain how modern systems like GPS allow precise location tracking anywhere in the world.

Participation and registration

The talks are open to in-person attendees, with seating limited to the auditorium’s capacity, or virtual attendees via videoconference. To join, reservations must be made in advance via email at reservascor@muncyt.es or by phone at  689 578 727, specifying the sessions each group will attend.
