Elena Hernández Pereira, researcher at the UDC’s Centre for Research in Information and Communication Technologies, took part on 27th March in the conference “Green jobs in the Galician countryside”, organised by the law firm Zeres Abogados at the Círculo de Empresarios de Galicia in Vigo.
The event brought together experts in the forestry, technology and operational fields to analyse the challenges and opportunities within the sector in the context of the green transition. During the session, Elena Hernández spoke on behalf of CITIC, sharing insights into the application of artificial intelligence to sustainability and forest management.
In her presentation, the researcher highlighted the potential of AI as a key tool for boosting green jobs, improving forest protection and strengthening the fight against climate change. At the same time, she emphasised its role in the prevention and management of forest fires, one of the main challenges facing the Galician region.
Elena Hernández presented the ATEMPO project, of which she is the main researcher, focused on improving the effectiveness of emergency response in cross-border areas between Galicia, Castile and León, and northern Portugal. This project is committed to the use of advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence, to optimise coordination and decision-making in critical situations.
The event also featured presentations by Juan Picos, a lecturer at the University of Vigo, who discussed the strategic role of the forestry sector in Galicia, and Javier Silleda, a forest firefighter, who provided an operational perspective on fire prevention and suppression.
