CITIC brings artificial intelligence, robotics, inclusive technology and digital health to the public at the 30th “Día da Ciencia na Rúa”
A Coruña, May 11th, 2026
The CITIC at the Universidade da Coruña participated this past May 9th in the latest edition of “Día da Ciencia na Rúa”, an event of particular significance as it marked it 30th anniversary and was held, for the first time, in the Gardens of Méndez Núñez in A Coruña. This new venue allowed to recapture, symbolically speaking, the spirit of the initiative’s origins, which began three decades ago in the same central area of A Coruña, bringing science closer to the people strolling through the city centre throughout the day.
For this year’s event 54 tents were set up along the Paseo de las Palmeras, around the bandstand and in other areas of the gardens, offering a wide and varied programme aimed at both children and adults. In this context, CITIC had its own space in tent 11, where research staff, students and collaborators presented various interactive activities linked to some of the centre’s main areas of work: artificial intelligence, robotics, sustainability, virtual reality, astronomy, digital health and inclusive technologies.
The CITIC programme began with the session “Robótica intelixente e cognitiva”, led by Martín Naya, with the participation of Jaküb Muller. The session “AI contra o odio” was also held, hosted by Paloma Piot and Anxo Pérez.
Another of the activities held was “Algoritmos Verdes”, coordinated by Laura Morán Fernández, with contributions from María Merelas Ares and Xosé Manuel García García, which highlighted to the audience the importance of efficiency and sustainability in the field of technology.
Throughout the day, Paloma Piot, Xabier Pérez and Irene Brage also appeared on the CUAC FM radio programme, helping to disseminate CITIC’s activities and the scientific work carried out at the centre.
The programme continued with the event “O meu mapa das cancións que lembro”, presented by Hilda Romero Velo, which focused on the relationship between memory, music and technology. Irene Brage also participated alongside pupils from IES Ramón Menéndez Pidal – Zalaeta in the presentation of challenges from the Talentos Inclusivos project, during which the students demonstrated adapted technological solutions such as “licorniums”, materials with pictograms, adapted letters with grips and other resources designed to promote accessibility and participation.
The audience was also able to enjoy the sessions “Observación solar e recoñecemento de manchas solares con intelixencia artificial” and “Navegando pola galaxia co telescopio espacial Gaia e realidade virtual”, led by Xabier Pérez Couto, with the participation of Clara Valle, Andrija Zupic, Angel Regueiro Feal and Mateo Fernández Torreiro.
In the afternoon, Adriana Dapena presented the activity “Indución, circuítos e TIC para o desenvolvemento de proxectos”, alongside Óscar Fresnedo, Paula Castro and Liz Gamez, showcasing practical experiences related to circuits, induction and the development of technology projects to the audience.
The day concluded with the activity “Intelixencia artificial para mellorar a saúde da muller. Unha aplicación en incontinencia urinaria”, presented by Javier Pereira, with the participation of Jorge Rivadulla, Freddy Pérez and Isabel Tuñas, which demonstrated the potential of artificial intelligence applied to the field of women’s health.
CITIC’s participation in the 30th “Día da Ciencia na Rúa”reinforces its commitment to science outreach, knowledge transfer and the promotion of STEM careers. In an edition marked by the celebration of three decades of history and the fair’s move to a new urban venue, the centre helped to bring technological research to audiences of all ages through practical, accessible and interactive experiences.
