CITIC Recognizes Technological Excellence at the 6th Edition of XoveTIC

The Research Centre in Information and Communication Technologies (CITIC) at the University of A Coruña (UDC) awarded a total of nine research projects in the field of ICT during the 6th Edition of XoveTIC, held on October 5th and 6th. A total of 55 projects—between oral presentations and posters—were presented during the event. Awards were granted in various categories to recognize outstanding professionals and researchers in fields such as Artificial Intelligence, cybersecurity, data engineering, high-performance computing, and big data.

The Cátedra R Award:  “for the most relevant work in the field of security, broadly understood as both cybersecurity in ICT and other areas of security,” was awarded to Marc Bernice Angoue Avele, Darian Pérez-Adán, and Dariel Pereira Ruisánchez for their work “Espionage and Interference Through Pilot Attacks in Massive MIMO 5G.” The award was presented by Alfredo Ramos, General Director of R.

Hilda Romero Velo, Susana Ladra, José R. Paramá, and Fernando Silva Coira won the Cátedra Aldaba – WIB (Women, ICT & Business) Award, for “The most relevant work led by a woman as first author.” The award was presented by Virginia Mato, Director of the Chair, for their research titled “Indexing and Retrieval of Scores by Humming Based on Extracted Features.”

The Cátedra NTT DATA Award: “for the most relevant work in the field of diversity, social economy, and the promotion of equality,” was given to Lucía María Álvarez Crespo and Laura M. Castro for their project “Shedding Light on the Dark Side of Social Networks: Development of the First Galician Language Corpus for Detecting Misogyny on Twitter and Mastodon.” Marianne Blanco Martiño, Public Sector Director at NTT Data, presented the award.

The Cátedra CICAS Sngular Award: for the best work aligned with Open Science, Open Data, Open Access, and Open Source practices,” went to Eva Pardo, Iago Fernández, Santiago Fernández Noriega, María Martínez, and Laura Neto Riveiro for their research “Solution for Capturing and Visualizing Data from Wearable Devices.” Laura Castro Souto, Director of the Chair, presented the award.

The ITG Award: “for the most relevant work with industrial application,” was awarded to the research “Prediction of Inflow to Hydraulic Dams Using Neural Networks” by Alberto Fernández Sánchez, Juan Ramón Rabuñal Dopico, Daniel Rivero Cebrián, Alejandro Celestino Pazos Sierra, and Marcos Gestal. Gonzalo Bázquez Gil, from the Information Technologies Area of the Galician Technological Institute, presented the award.

The CPEIG Award: “for the best work with a first author holding a degree in Computer Engineering,” was given to Francisco Prado Valiño, Roi Santos Ríos, Carlos Gómez Rodríguez, and Jesús Vilares for their research “Prototype of an Entity Recognition System for the Digital Management of Antimicrobial Resistance.” Pilar Vila, Board Member of CPEIG, presented the award.

Two TIC Cluster Awards were granted. The Best Poster Award went to Patricia Concheiro Moscoso, Betania Groba, María del Carmen Miranda Duro, and Diego Álvarez Estévez for “Effectiveness of the Xiaomi Mi Band 5 Compared to Polysomnography in Sleep Measurement.” The Best Oral Presentation Award was given to Iago Fernández Garrido and Ángel Gómez for their talk “Virtual Reality for Cognitive Stimulation in the Elderly and People with Disabilities.” Both awards were presented by Alfredo Ramos on behalf of the TIC Cluster.

Lastly, the CITIC Foundation Award, for “The most relevant in basic or theoretical research,” was presented to Roberto Prado Rodríguez, Patricia González, Julio R. Banga, and Ramón Doallo for their work “Self-Adaptive Cooperation Scheme in a Parallel CAO Algorithm for Binary Combinatorial Problems.” The award was presented by Salvador Naya, Vice-Rector for Scientific Policy, Research, and Knowledge Transfer, and Nereida María Canosa Domínguez, Councillor for Innovation, Mobility, and Infrastructure at the A Coruña City Council.

These awards highlight the diversity of proposed approaches that drive innovation and excellence in fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Big Data, Smart Networks, and High-Performance Computing.
