Inspira STEAM 2023-2024, coordinated by CITIC researcher Verónica Bolón, begins the search for mentors

13/10/2023 - CITIC

The Inspira STEAM educational program is looking for mentors and centers interested in participating in the project. The registration period ends next Sunday, October 15 and can be done from the program’s intranet.

Inspira STEAM is a program promoted by the University of Deusto and coordinated in A Coruña by CITIC researcher Verónica Bolón, which seeks to encourage scientific-technological vocations among students, especially among girls.

According to Eustat – Confebask, in 4 years the number of enrollments in STEAM areas decreased by 16.6%, of which only 31% in University and 9% in FP are female students. The gender gap in STEAM is palpable, so the main objectives of the program are to show the newest referents of women scientists and technologists, to value the role of women in these areas throughout history or to raise awareness of stereotypes so that they do not condition the decisions that students can make about their professional career.

The mission of the mentors is to be a reference for the children and to try to prevent young girls from discarding STEAM studies because they do not know what kind of work they can do or do not believe in their abilities to do it.

Being a mentor involves developing 6 mentoring sessions, of one hour duration, with a group of 8 to 15 students from 6th grade of Primary or 1st grade of ESO. These sessions will be held during school hours during the 2023/2024 school year. To teach these classes, mentors will receive a 5-hour online training in which they will be provided with the information and materials necessary to develop the workshops.
