Seminar on advanced models for estimating labour market indicators in small areas at the UDC’s Faculty of Computer Science
A Coruña, May 12th, 2026
The Faculty of Computer Science at the Universidade da Coruña will host this coming Thursday, May 14th, at 09:30 AM, a specialised seminar on advanced statistics entitled “Small area estimation of labour indicators under area-level Dirichlet mixed models”, delivered by Professor Domingo Morales, from the Universidad Miguel Hernández in Elche. The lecture, organised by the research group MODES, will take place in the Víctor Gulías Undergraduate Lecture Theatre at the faculty, and it will also be possible to attend online via Microsoft Teams.
During the lecture, Professor Domingo Morales will present a new statistical model designed to improve the estimation of labour indicators in small areas, such as provinces or specific population groups.
This methodology enables more accurate predictions to be made regarding the proportions of people in employment, unemployed and economically inactive, as well as the calculation of unemployment rates and their margins of error using simulation techniques. It thus provides a robust statistical tool for analysing the labour market in contexts where sample data is limited.
The model has been validated through various studies and applied to data from the Spanish Labour Force Survey (EPA for its name in Spanish) for the fourth quarter of 2022, with results disaggregated by gender and age group, with the aim of estimating provincial labour market indicators in Spain.
Online access to the session will be via Microsoft Teams, using the link provided in the official seminar announcement.
