A Coruña, April 30th, 2026

Researcher at UDC’s CITIC and Professor of Applied Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics Carlos Vázquez Cendón has been appointed co-Editor-in-Chief of the scientific journal Mathematics and Computers in Simulation, published by Elsevier.

This is one of the leading international journals in the field of mathematical modelling, simulation and scientific computing, with a long history and a significant impact on the research community. It is currently ranked 3rd out of the 344 journals indexed in the field of Applied Mathematics, according to the Journal Citation Reports.

In 2025, the journal received over 4,000 articles, with an acceptance rate of approximately 10%, reflecting its high scientific standards and highly selective nature.

The nomination was put forward by a specific committee of the International Association for Mathematics and Computers in Simulation (IMACS) and subsequently accepted by Elsevier on the basis of the professor’s curriculum vitae. Until now, Carlos Vázquez Cendón had been part of the editorial team as one of more than 80 Associate Editors, comprising researchers of international renown from around the world.

Currently, the researcher at the UDC’s CITIC is also Editor-in-Chief of the SeMA Journal, published by Springer, and is an Associate Editor for other leading scientific journals such as Applied Mathematics and Computation, the International Journal on Computer Methods and the Journal of Computational Finance.

Beyond the recognition that this appointment brings, the researcher highlights the responsibility it entails “given the duties associated with this role at a serious, high-impact scientific journal”. Vázquez Cendón notes that “the tasks to be carried out are in addition to those of teaching, research and administration within the university, but I am pleased that I can contribute to the internationalisation indicators of the research group, CITIC and the UDC”. “Most colleagues in the profession and field view this type of appointment and responsibility very positively,” he underlines.

His research career in the field of applied mathematics has resulted in more than 150 articles, of which over 140 are JCR publications, and he has delivered more than 50 guest lectures at international conferences. In addition, he has supervised 23 doctoral theses and a significant number of master’s dissertations within the inter-university master’s programmes in which he participates. Part of his research has been carried out under technology transfer contracts with private companies and public administrations, and another part within international projects.

About the CITIC

The CITIC is an investigation centre that boosts progress and excellency at R&D&I applied to ICT, created in 2008 by the Universidade da Coruña (UDC). The scientific activity is structured around four main areas of research: Artificial Intelligence, Data Science and Engineering; High-Performance Computing; and Smart Services and Networks, as well as a research area transversal to all others: Cybersecurity.

The CITIC is credited as a Centre of Excellence and a member of the CIGUS Network for the 2024-2027 period, which guarantees the quality and impact of its research. The endorsement, structure and improvement of the CITIC is cofinanced by the Xunta de Galicia and 60% by the European Union within the framework of the Operative Program FEDER Galicia 2021-2027, with the goal of promoting “a more intelligent Europe: An innovative and intelligent economic transformation” (ED431G 2023/01).
